"Education is not the filling of a pail,

but the lighting of a fire"

MY WORK

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

"I believe in empowering individuals to make informed choices and to bear the consequences that will follow."

I believe that a teacher is so much more than a provider or facilitator of knowledge. A teacher is a

Role Model,

Social Worker

Counsellor

Nurse

Safety Officer

... and so much more.

We go above and beyond educating a child about fractions and life cycles, about grammar and essay-writing. We teach a child how to be respectful and respected, to persevere in the face of difficulty, to forgive even when it hurts, to think out of the box, and to love learning, among the multi-faceted complexity called #life. And we live it out ourselves in our daily lives.

In Hans Christian Andersen's words, "Where words fail, music speaks". As a music teacher, I strive to transcend differences, build bridges, and spark the flame of creativity through the medium of music. I aim to do that by first instilling an enthusiasm for music in my students. Apart from opening minds to the endless opportunities for creativity that music provides, I intend to facilitate moments where music can touch hearts.

The next question, then, is how I intend to go about fulfilling these ideals. Firstly, I intend to leverage on my students' current interests and existing schemas in order to help them build bridges to comprehend the value of what I teach.

Secondly, I intend to push my students to greater heights in music through the use of quality assessments that accurately reflect students' understanding and are worded clearly enough for them to understand what they have to improve on.

Finally, I plan to work proactively with other stakeholders such as my colleagues, the school and the parents, to improve on my teaching practice and empower my students to make informed choices and bear the consequences that will follow. This is truly something I feel is imperative as it will carry forward to the many decisions they will have to make in future for which they will have to bear the consequences for.
